Apple has admitted that it’s iphone slowdown is not a rumor. It slows down the older iPhones with the release of new updates. This  iPhone slowdown is said to be done to save the battery life and prevent the phones from sudden shutdowns.

The company had implemented this strategy on the iPhone 6, 6S and SE in 2016 during a software update. Later, it did the same on iPhone 7 as well when it released iOS 11.2.

“Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices,” said a spokesperson at Apple.

However, the iPhone slowdown is not a planned obsolescence according to Apple. Rather, it’s an initiative to protect the phones against battery problems and boost the life of these phones.

Reasons of the slow down

According to the company, it does so for the good because when a battery becomes old, it fails to deliver the apt amount of current as required by the iPhone’s processor at full speed. This may cause the iPhone to shut down unexpectedly so that the internal components don’t get damaged.

In this context, the spokesperson of Apple said: “Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6S and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.”

Lawsuits against Apple

The year 2017 did not make a great ending for the tech giant Apple. It is said that the iPhone users were not formally informed about this slow down feature who considered this as some kind of a bug. As a result, the company has faced two lawsuits claiming that it intentionally slowed down the performance of the devices to promote the newer products. Two class-action lawsuits were filed against the company in the US claiming that Apple did not have the consent of the consumers before slowing down their device.

Apology from Apple

The latest update is that Apple has apologized for the slow down of the older iPhones. It has also reduced the price for replacement of battery. The company has clarified its stand by conveying that it can never do anything intentionally to decrease the life of its products.
